How many times have you said “get off the Ipad!” or “Hey, look up, you’re missing out on life?” to your kid?
Raising a child in this new world has come with its challenges. Challenges that I also get caught up in.
As a blogger, I’m constantly checking my smartphone or laptop and getting lost in technology (does that sound familiar to any of you?). Which, to be frank, sort of makes me feel like a bit of a hypocrite.
As an adult, I have created this space to share and grow our lives with you, which means that I will have to be online more than the “non-blogging mama”.
Jayden doesn’t need to be online as often as I am. However, when I think about Jayden’s future, I’ve come to accept that technology will be apart of it. Weather it be in his everyday life at home or at work, he will be surrounded by it.
That’s why I choose to let Jayden learn the language of technology.
The Language of Technology | Level Up Kids
I think back and remember the countless hours I spent outside exploring the world around me. Oh, those were the days! However, times have changed. Children enjoy technology more today than ever before. I believe that helping your child (instead of scolding them) about staying in the loop of the “how” of it all, will be 1000% beneficial for them in ten or fifteen years.
Thankfully, Jayden was given the opportunity to receive a sneak peak of a few STEM programs offered at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (Level Up Kids) a couple of weeks ago.
As predicted, he fell right into the interactive set up of the classroom. He loved learning a few basics about Scratch, a free online program that helps children gain knowledge of simple coding. Pretty cool right?
There are so many great benefits of STEM and technology. Level Up Kids offers a variety of different programs for our children. Our personal favourite is Youtube Camp.
YouTube camp is for kids who want to learn how to create an awesome channel. This camp will give them the skills to create engaging videos. Learn more about the the camps on the Level Up Kids website.

Career
Careers will be far more advanced and like it or not, we will want need our children to be apart of the ever changing world of technology.
Skills
Now is the time to nurture their brains with simple STEM education. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. The more they use it, the better their skills will be!
Problem Solving
Students learn to understand the problem, find a way to attack it, and work until it is done and they can pass to the next level
Use appropriate tools strategically
Most programming tasks can be solved in several different ways. Students learn that selecting the appropriate tool can save them time and effort.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
Computer programming teaches students to generalize their thinking. They learn to use solutions to previously solved problems to attack more complicated ones!

I think the Minecraft Adventure!
We sampled a bit at the event we went too and the kids seemed so interested in that one !
Intro to programming…I think. The robotics one looks cool too.
We were looking at that one too. Jayden reallllly wanted the Youtube one so I said sure 😛

There are so many awesome programs! I had no idea this existed! My son loves Minecraft and Roblox but he aspires to be a YouTuber. So the YouTube camp would be awesome for him!

I agree, it’s such a double edge sword. We want them to explore but we also want to encourage them to adapt to the ever changing world of technology. Such a hard thing to balance.
Okay so I LOVE THIS POST. For a few reasons, I am also on my technology a lot being a blogger momma like you. My boys are Minecraft obsessed and I’m actually okay with it. It’s much better than other games out there. And last, I teach Grade 5 and for the first time ever taught SCRATCH this year! They LOVED it. I couldn’t believe how easily they adapted it to their learning.
Best comment ever!! Gr.5 is the perfect age to introduce Scratch (IMO). Jayden will be gearing up for Gr.5 in Sept so I thought this was the perfect way to showcase the backend of games and programs. P.S. had no idea you taught Gr.5 ! So cool!
