As I continue to look for natural and healthy alternatives to help me relax and feel stronger, I came across Pure Pit Balm, a natural and organic deodorant. At first, I was confused at the product. A deodorant that does not come on a stick ?! Well, I never!
Intrigued, I did some more research and found some really disturbing facts. I will not go into it on my blog but if you are interested in finding out a little more of what the commercial antiperspirants/deodorants contain then I suggest that you read the rest of this post and also visit www.purepitbalm.ca.
Pure Pit Balm uses 100% natural ingredients. Certified organic cococnut oil, certified organic arrowroot powder, aluminum-free baking soda, plus essential oils for the scented versions, and thats it!
I have been using Pit Balm Lavender & Lemongrass religiously since receiving them. The consistency of the product is whipped, smooth and light. The deodorant melts by the warm of your finger and is absorbes easily into your skin. There is no white residue left and leaves you smelling fresh 🙂

Tell us a little about your self?

Born in the 70s, I was fortunate enough to grow up in a household where my mom focused on healthy whole foods, before GMOs really hit the market. Like many of you, we played outside until the street lights came on, there were no scheduled playdates, and we ate real food. This set the foundation for a healthy lifestyleand I had become interested in natural personal care products from a pretty young age.  Deodorant was no exception. I had tried everything under the sun beginning in my late teens – salt sticks, natural deodorant sticks and powders – you name it, I tried it, and I would always grudgingly return to my commercial antiperspirants because nothing seemed to work.

Then I had kids. This was a game changer. It really opened my eyes to all the toxins that we have around us and use on a daily basis, not just for our children (have you ever looked at the ingredients in diapers?! Yikes!), but for ourselves. I began a mission to more thoroughly research everything we brought into the home and I made some pretty big changes, introducing cloth diapers, natural detergents, natural cleaning products, and ‘real’ whole foods, like what I grew up on. It became clear that it’s just as important to scrutinize what we put on our bodies as what we put in our bodies.

As I began to research natural ingredients that kill bacteria-causing odor, I thought to myself that perhaps I need to stop looking on store shelves and start looking in my pantry. After all, if I was going to apply this stuff to my skin every day, it would be wonderful if its ingredients were pure enough to eat. After several attempts and trials, I developed a concoction that even my very physically active husband swore by.

Then I started talking to friends and neighbors about it. This is when my good friend and partner came into the picture. On one of our weekly hikes, I brought a little Tupperware of my new deodorant and threw it in her car despite her initial protests. “But I sweat a lot when I work out!” she said.  I kept on her and a week later, she called me and said we need to sell this stuff! And Pure Pit Balm was born. It feels good, it smells good, it is good. Natural, effective, pure deodorant that won’t break the bank. We hope you love it as much as we do.

What sparked the idea of starting pure pit balm?

We’ve tried nearly every natural deodorant on the market and many of them didn’t work at all in fighting odour, and the ones that did were really not affordable for the regular, everyday person who wants to buy natural, healthy products for their families.  So we thought we would attempt to make this product, out of our homes to bring down the cost, and make it more readily available.  After all, we all deserve a healthy body!

Is there a meaning behind your shop name?

Just as the name states…..PURE, simple, natural ingredients.  We thought we wanted something that was self-explanatory: it’s pure, it’s for your pits, and it’s a balm, not a typical stick.  And it’s kinda catchy!

Is there a specific item that you love the most or means the most to you?

We have one item and it’s a deodorant balm, and we love all the scents! In fact, we each of one of each version of Pure Pit Balm in our bathrooms to suit the mood we are in that day! For example, when out at a BBQ, I like using pink grapefruit; it’s so summery and fresh.  For evenings, I love lavender; it’s soothing and relaxing…just what this mama needs after a long day of chasing around the kids! For work, I prefer unscented; like many of our clients, the workplace has become a scent-free zone, and so the unscented version, while it smells naturally like coconut (certified organic coconut oil is the first ingredient), it has no added essential oils.  Lemongrass is my husband’s favourite scent and I love wearing it when I work out; it’s such a fun, fresh scent that energizes me on my morning runs!

If you could give one piece of advice on how to start a business, what would it be?

Don’t give up and follow your heart.  There will be many roadblocks along they way.  One of my favorite quotes “if you’re trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I’ve had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”

Who inspires you?

The person that has inspired my life is my mom, because she is the one that keeps me going.  She has done a lot of things to put me where I am right now.  She always motivates me on never giving up on life.  She is the most wonderful person in my life.  And also, my kids! I look around and think about the world our parents were raised in, and even the world we were raised in, and it’s changed so much. With technology, we’ve traded in normal, natural options for convenient, synthetic ones…and we need to get back to basics!

What’s next for pure pit balm in 2016 or 2017

We are working diligently at expanding our retail offerings and connecting with more people via social media, local farmers markets and charity events.   We just want people to stop thinking of natural options as ‘luxuries’ and more like a priority!  If we don’t make ourselves a priority, then who will?!

  1. I’d be interested in the pink grapefruit or lemongrass. I think both are perfect scents for summer.

  2. Chasa Parvin

This is interesting!I have never seen deodorant not in a stick as well! I eventually want to move my products over to all natural products. This would be a great way to start.

  3. Courtney

I love the idea of natural deodorant. If I won, I’d choose pink grapefruit

  4. I love anything lavender! At first glance I thought this was a cream since it’s not in the usual stick type packaging.

  5. Crafts onthego

    I’d pick sensitive unscented.

  6. Lavender – I’d want to eat the lemongrass & grapefruit and unscented isn’t as much fun as lavender – cheers & happy long weekend

  7. Kaye Oberg

I would pick lemongrass for sure! In scented needed for work obviously. I tried Toms unscented, it doesn’t last too long, or have a great scent/feel like it does much at all. I have never seen a whipped deodorant- pure genius & I bet it feels amazing!!
